Shows, Events & Ceremonies.

The Unit displays at a wide range of events including regional and national country fairs and festivals. We provide troopers (mounted and dismounted) for ceremonial duties as well as extras for period film and TV dramas. In the arena shows we demonstrate the elements of period cavalry drill as well as illustrations of sword drill and skill-at-arms displays involving the sabre ('splitting the turks head' & 'running the ring'), the pistol and the lance ('tent pagging').

Battles & Living History

The 12th musters for battle re-enactments both in the UK and abroad as part of the Napoleonic Association and the European Napoleonic Society. We also provide a full living history representation of an established picket camp of the 12th Light Dragoons c1810 with displays of period weapons as well as trying to demonstrate the realities of life within one of Wellington's light cavalry regiments. Considerable effort is put into the research of minor details to ensure the overall effect is complete.

Riding and Horsemastery

The Unit is committed to the portrayal of a living cavlary regiment. From running regular riding schools to practice orders & drill as well as basic horsemanship, to learning to look after the horses on picket lines in the camp using authentic equipment, the 'business of horses' forms a major part of the life of the unit at shows. Much of the tack and equipment is made by members and there is an active horsemastery program led by the two 'rough riders'.

Civilian & Camp Life

Although the majority of the members are riding troopers, the Unit pursues an active camp life. Civilian members, both male and female form a group re-creating the dress and elegence of the Regency with tentage and campaign furniture of the period. Side saddle riding is provided for the ladies. Regular mess meals are held at major events and an active camp life is encouraged to balance the hard work and commitment required during shows and displays.
