The 12th (prince of Wales's) Light Dragoons was founded as a Napoleonic Re-enactment and Living History group by a group of enthusiasts with the support of English Heritage in the late 1980's. The original aim of the group was to provide an authentic British light cavalry unit for displays and events, principally showing an impression of the 12th in Light Marching Order of the 1812 pattern uniform. The unit took part in many displays and shows around the country, often with other groups, at English Heritage living history events.

Since this beginning, the Unit has evolved and expanded. After a fruitful partnership with English Heritage, the 12th has expanded both in numbers of members and also the range of activities involved with as well as broadening the period of 12th history displayed. Since 1997, the Unit has progressively increased the size and variety of the living history camp life portrayed with the inclusion of civilian period members. It now offers a full living history and riding display of the period 1808 to 1815, with all Orders of dress involved.
